Trends come and go, and it’s no different in the alcohol world! Though a lot of cocktails will be around for decades - even centuries - there are moments when certain tipples step into the limelight. Tastes develop, too, and cocktails evolve, with each year offering up something new for our palettes to enjoy. So, we thought we’d put together some of the most popular drinks we expect to see this year, with some blasts from the past and innovative ideas to make 2023 exciting.
1. Negroni Sbagliatos
How could we not talk about the Negroni Sbagliato? When it comes to popular drinks, this one can thank Emma D’arcy and social media for helping it blow up, with the Game of Thrones actor famously saying it was their drink of choice. A mix of Campari, vermouth and prosecco, it’s a tangier cocktail that’s lighter than a typical Negroni, with a balanced flavour and plenty of booze.
If you’re up for making your own Negroni Sbagliato, we’ve got a great recipe you can follow at home.
2. Whiskey Sours
Simple to make and with a wonderful flavour, our UrbanBar mixologists love a Whisky Sour. This is a really versatile drink that can be enjoyed throughout the year, and you’re welcome to switch the spirit base for something else, but lemon juice and sugar are a must! Tart and rich, this is a drink you’ll love to sip. Shake with egg whites for a thicker, foamier cocktail that’ll impress your guests.
3. Japanese Gin Cocktails
Not technically a cocktail, but Japanese Gin is still something we expect to be popular within the cocktail scene in 2023. Gin has become an incredibly popular spirit, particularly in the UK, but with a desire for difference on the horizon, we think Japanese Gin is going to be the next big hit. Give Hernö Old Tom a try in your next Martini or G&T for a splash of delicate sweetness and plenty of fresh, zingy notes.
4. All Things ‘Tini’
The 90s has been all over trends for the past few years, and in 2023 its influence on cocktails is clear. In particular, the ‘tini’ is back! This could be a Martini, an Appletini, an Espresso Martini, or anything else that fits the bill. There are even tea-tinis, blending tea and vodka for a new cocktail that’ll be perfect when the weather gets warmer.
5. Low and No Alcohol Cocktails
We’re (of course) lovers of a boozy drink at UrbanBar, but there’s also plenty of space in the cocktail world for low or zero-alcohol drinks. Whether you’re having a night off or switching to an alcohol-free lifestyle, cocktails with a lower ABV% are becoming a hit amongst Brits. Bring on the virgin cocktails in 2023!
We have many zero-alcohol ingredients, including a wide range of delicious syrups to add plenty of flavour to your drinks this year.
